Whistleblowers claim Border Patrol surveillance cameras 'out of service' as GOP demands answers from DHS

U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee Republicans say whistleblowers came forward to the committee last week, claiming that "some of the busiest Southwest border sectors have nearly 50 or more cameras offline with multiple towers that have been out of service for more than a year." On Wednesday, the House Homeland Security Committee sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, claiming that whistleblowers came forward to the committee last week with concerning information on this issue. The letter from Republicans to Mayorkas demanded answers.


Mayorkas touts 'enormous opportunities' with AI as DHS launches new pilot programs

The Department of Homeland Security is announcing a new artificial intelligence road map that includes multiple programs to better train immigration officers, plan for hazards and tackle child exploitation and fentanyl smuggling -- as the use of the technology grows within the federal government. The agency announced on Monday three pilot programs that will use AI in three agencies: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The New York Times reported that the programs will be launched in partnership with OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic -- an American AI startup. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is expected to face a House impeachment vote. ICE's Homeland Security Investigation (HSI), which primarily deals with transnational crime, will develop a system to improve summaries that investigators rely on.


DHS recruiting 'AI Corps' to fight fentanyl distribution, online child exploitation and cyberattacks

A group of scientists from across the U.S. claim to have created the first artificial intelligence capable of generating AI without human supervision. The Department of Homeland Security is recruiting dozens of artificial intelligence experts for an "AI Corps" that will use the blossoming tech to advance national security goals, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Tuesday. The 50 experts will be part of a DHS initiative to leverage AI for a variety of efforts, including combating fentanyl distribution, online child exploitation and cyberattacks, according to Mayorkas. He announced the AI Corps alongside DHS Chief Information Officer Eric Hysen at a Mountain View, California, event as the House tried and failed to impeach the secretary.
